Chinese New Year celebration + Super Bowl party

This past weekend was an eventful one. Between Chinese New Year and Super Bowl Sunday, there were several parties going on which made for a festive weekend. 🙂

On Friday, I got together with our friends for a Chinese New Year dinner. We met at a new restaurant in Chinatown, Z&Y Peking Duck, which has been all the rage in SF’s food scene. Chinatown was absolutely lit — the streets were filled with people celebrating the holiday and fireworks were firing off in the street.

Chinese New Year is a huge holiday and celebrated by billions of people across Asia. It celebrates the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar versus the solar calendar. In China, this holiday is like Christmas in the U.S., and people take off work & school for several weeks to spend time with their families. I have sweet memories from childhood of waking up to red envelopes of cash, eating dumplings for dinner, and going to parties with the Chinese community in my hometown.

Of course, I missed my family a lot over the weekend, but I’m grateful for this friend group who also appreciated this holiday and wanted to celebrate. We had a family-style dinner that lasted a few hours — the drinks went around and it was a very lively time.

The meal included traditional, auspicious Chinese dishes for abundance and good fortune for the upcoming year, including roast duck, white fish, and hand-pulled noodles.

The highlight of the meal was the gender reveal for Janice and Rodaan’s baby (they are the first friends in our group to get pregnant). They chose to do the reveal through Suzie Cakes (a San Francisco staple). We all found out…it’s a boy!! We are all so beyond thrilled. ❤

Fast forward to Sunday. I started off the day with a walk through the neighborhood and grocery shopping.

Saturday morning was spent in the kitchen. I made potato salad for a Super Bowl party later in the afternoon. I tried out a new recipe, and I think it was my best one yet. 🙂 I prefer my potato salad pretty creamy, so I used part sour cream and part mayonnaise – it was divine!

In the afternoon, we headed to Janice and Rodaan’s apartment for the party. I was really impressed with the food spread by our group. Everyone brought one dish, and it ended up being quite the feast.

The party was a classic football-themed party with beer pong, Super Bowl Squares gambling, and plenty of white claws flowing around. This year was a big deal as San Francisco’s team, the 49ers, played in the Super Bowl! There was major pride around the city as everyone was so pumped to see our home team represent. The game was a tight one that went into overtime, but unfortunately, we lost.

The highlight for me was Usher playing the halftime show, featuring several nostalgic songs from high school and college. It was the best halftime show in several years, in my opinion. 😉 The show definitely catered to millennials, and it was humbling when we all realized how old some of these songs were…

Thank you for stopping by today, and hope to see you in the next post!
