Week 6 of marathon training + running without music

Happy Sunday!! For those living in New England, I hope you’re staying warm with all the snow this week! I’m blogging from Boston as I’m visiting my brother this weekend, and it’s been nonstop snow here as well as NYC. Stay tuned for my Boston weekend recap post.

Another week of training in the books. Overall a low-key training week. No run felt too easy or too hard.

One thing I’m working on is trying to get back into running without music/not needing constant stimulation to get through runs. Flashback to my first few years of running when I never ran with music. I loved being alone in my thoughts and using runs to work through life things. This continued all the way up to my first half marathon when I trained/raced each mile without any distraction. I loved it!

It wasn’t until the marathon when I started putting on tunes/podcasts/comedy tracks to get through those long runs. Lately, I feel like I’ve been depending on these distractions, listening to song after song and wishing the run will end – (this also may be a product of lots of treadmill miles and running in the freezing cold). So I’m working on getting back to the basics, and using runs as a time to spend with myself, be aware of my surroundings, and not needing extra noise to enjoy the run for what it is 🙂

Monday: REST

Tuesday: 4 miles easy run on the treadmill (10:03 pace)

Wednesday: 7 miles along the East River (9:55 pace). No music – loved it! It was a BEAUTIFUL morning and I indulged in getting to wear shorts for the first time this year.

Thursday: 4 miles on the treadmill (10:05 pace). Felt great! Ran a mile without music

Friday: 6 miles in Central Park (10:00 pace). The plan called for 10 miles…I moved up my long run because of my weekend trip, and I was nervous about running 4 days in a row this week. Also it was sub-20 degrees outside and I was just thinking about getting back home and packing the entire time. After 6 miles, I knew my heart wasn’t in this run and decided to call an uber home. From even before the run began, I was already self-talking  negatively :(. Need to work on this and stop making excuses!!

Saturday: REST

Sunday: REST
